15 Louis

"You know, I didn't realise so much work went into these things," Louis said, stuffing tissue paper into a glossy white bag and holding it up to admire the effect.

"It wasn't like this in Parksworth," Jenny admitted. "If the sausage sizzle had a cake stall attached, that was a fancy event."

Louis grinned. "Maybe I'll have to visit Parksworth someday," he mused. "You can show me all of your favourite haunts."

Jenny made a face. "You'd hate Parksworth," she said. "It's hot, dry, and there's not much going on. Well, unless you like greyhound racing and smashing tinnies."

"Maybe not my first choice for a holiday destination, then," Louis admitted. "But if you're ever going back, I could tag along. It's all about the company one keeps, after all."

Jenny looked at him, for a moment, a small smile playing on the corners of her lips. Their eyes met, and Louis held her gaze. He searched those green eyes for a sign that maybe, just maybe, Jenny was feeling something like what he was. But she looked away, picking up another piece of tissue paper.

"How did you get stuck with the gift bags, anyway?" Louis asked, not wanting to push Jenny too hard. Maybe there was a glimmer of something from her, but he had to be sure. Had to be absolutely sure before he made a move because otherwise, it wasn't worth risking their friendship. "Don't they have lackeys for this sort of thing?"

"We are the lackeys!" Jenny laughed. "Volunteering isn't all glamorous, you know. Just be glad we're not in Parksworth, or you'd be grilling cheap snags on a barbecue. You'd have to wear a hairnet."

Louis shuddered at the thought. "Revolting," he proclaimed. "I think my talents are better spent using my connections, don't you?"

"Absolutely," Jenny agreed. "You don't have to help with these bags, you know. You've done so much already. I mean, you got us the venue, that wine sponsor . . . not to mention freaking acrobats. How do you even know acrobats?"

"I don't, really," Louis confessed. "But I do know the promotor. It was a good deal for them, a preview show before they start their season. And that precious thing: exposure. The crowd coming to the ball is exactly the type who'd hire them for private parties."

"True," Jenny agreed. "But have I told you how grateful I am?"

"About a thousand times," Louis grinned. "But don't stop. I'm not used to this do-gooding thing. I need lots of positive reinforcement, or I'll return to my wicked and idle ways."

Jenny laughed, looking up at him with something that made Louis' chest constrict. At that moment, he felt so sure that Jenny wanted him to kiss her. It would have been so easy to sweep the pile of tissue paper to the floor, press her down onto the giant oak dining table, and devour her pretty pink lips with his own. Desire surged through him at that thought, heady and overwhelming. But he had to be sure. With any other woman, he would have made a move long ago, but with Jenny, it was different.
